Cooked Playdough Recipe

This is the recipe recommended by Playschool - A long standing Australian children's show produced by the ABC.

What you need

4 cups flour
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 cup salt
4 cups water
A few drops of food colouring
2 tablespoons cooking oil

What you need to do

Sift flour into a large cooking pot.
Add cream of tartar and salt and mix to combine.
Combine water and a few drops of food colouring in a large jug.
Add oil and water to dry ingredients and stir to combine.
Continue stirring mixture over medium heat until the mixture thickens.
Remove dough from saucepan and allow to cool before use.

I have seen other variations of this.

2 cups of flour
1 cup salt
4 tbls cream of tarter
2 tbls of cooking oil
2 cups boiling water
food colouring
peppermint oil

and

1/2 cup salt

1 cup plain flour

2 tbs cream of tartar

1 cup water

1 tbs oil

3 drops liquid food colouring.

The technique is the same but the quantities vary.

Some recipes say that it is important to stir the recipe consistently while it cooks.  Others say using boiled water improves the texture and some suggest that boiled water is so effective that if you use it you dont really need to cook at all (just stir in a bowl until it has cooled considerably.
